Stress

Stress can be a major contributory factor to infertility. The reproductive system is intimately related to the adrenal glands. When we are under stress, the adrenals become overtaxed, and release adrenalin, which inhibits our ability to utilize progesterone, thus impeding fertility.

When we are stressed, the sympathetic nervous system (the part that accelerates the heart rate, constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure) can become hyperstimulated, flooding the bones and muscles with blood so that we can either fight or flee from danger. However, a hyperstimulated nervous system sends less blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, thereby impairing their function.

Stress can also cause high prolactin, a hormone released by the pituitary, which, when elevated, can effect ovulation and fertility.

One of the greatest stresses for a woman, is the inability to conceive, which further compounds the problem.

In Chinese medical terms, stress will obstruct the flow of Liver Qi, and this can be observed in BBT charts with erratic, sawtooth patterns, or irregular menstrual cycles.

The beneficial effects of acupuncture on relieving stress are well-documented, and can be very useful when treating women who are having difficulty in conceiving.
