Unexplained infertility
Unexplained infertility means simply that western diagnostic methodology has been unable to find a problem. There is a chain of factors needed to result in pregnancy, and the slightest malfunctioning in just one of the links in the chain can result in the failure to conceive. One hormone produced at the wrong time of the cycle, a tiny change in the PH of the cervical mucus, a millimetre less depth in the endometrial lining can be the deciding factor between a pregnancy and yet another period. Often when these changes are very minute, they are too small to be measured by western medical diagnostic procedures.
However, even where no clear biochemical cause for infertility can be established, the acupuncturist can very often find a physiological cause for the subfertility using Chinese medical theory, and it can be treated accordingly. By examining the tongue, pulse and symptomatology, the Chinese medical practitioner can pick up subtle imbalances on an energetic level, that may not show up in western medical investigations.
In Chinese medicine, “unexplained infertility” translates simply as impaired reproductive functioning, and reproductive functioning can be healed and supported by bringing the entire body back into balance.
